NER P7 Coal Hopper North Eastern Railway Grey (ND).
The North Eastern Railway (NER) P7 Coal Hopper, and its LNER equivalent the Diagram 12, is the latest all-new wagon to join Graham Farish’s extensive range of N Scale rolling stock. The P7 was the NER’s most successful 20-ton wooden hopper wagon and numbered more than 17,000 by the time of The Grouping in 1924, they revolutionised the movement of coal with each carrying a load 7 times greater the Chaldron Wagons they replaced. Eventually replaced themselves once newer metal-bodied mineral wagons arrived, the final examples of P7 and Diagram 12 hoppers spent their last years in private ownership and internal use.
The new Graham Farish model combines a precision moulded chassis and hopper body with fine engraving of the planks and hopper doors inside and out, and authentic rivet patterns. Separate metal handrails are added, up to 10 per wagon, and the brakes, brake handles and monkey tails used to control the hooper doors are fitted individually too. The buffer heads are produced from turned brass and metal wheelsets are fitted as standard, along with NEM coupling pockets providing quick and easy removal of the couplings if needed. Decoration is to the usual high standard that you’ve come to expect from Graham Farish, and this model forms part of our Railway Celebrations range, signifying the design’s connection to the North East and the birthplace of the modern railway.
