Celebrate a key chapter in British locomotive engineering with this model representing the legacy of Hawthorn Leslie & Company, one of the most important industrial locomotive manufacturers in the UK. Formed in 1886 through the merger of A. Leslie & Company of Hebburn and the locomotive builders R. & W. Hawthorn of St. Peter’s, Newcastle upon Tyne, the company became a major supplier of steam locomotives for both industrial and main line use.
Hawthorn Leslie produced locomotives to order for railway companies while also developing a range of successful standard designs. Among the most recognisable were 0-4-0 saddle tank locomotives and specialised fireless locomotives, widely used in industrial environments such as collieries, docks, and factories.
In 1937, the company’s locomotive works at Forth Banks merged with Robert Stephenson & Company of Darlington to form Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns Ltd. By this time, Hawthorn Leslie had constructed an impressive total of 2,783 locomotives, cementing its place in British railway history.
The newly formed company later became part of Vulcan Foundry in 1943, marking the end of Hawthorn Leslie’s 137-year association with the Forth Banks works. Today, their locomotives remain an enduring symbol of Britain’s industrial railway heritage, making this model an ideal addition for enthusiasts of industrial steam, pre-grouping, and early BR-era layouts.
